He purchased the Barracuda for $5,000 in 1983—with a Hemi—and has continued developing and racing it ever since.
Today, the Plymouth is powered by a 540-cubic-inch Hemi featuring an Indy aluminum block, Stage V cylinder heads and a traditional cross-ram intake. The owner estimates that the combination produces approximately 810–820 horsepower.
Power is delivered through a modified 727 automatic transmission and a Strange S60 rear end. The car has also received stronger driveline components over the years after its increased power began breaking axles, flexplates, gears and yokes.
Its personal best is an impressive 9.06 seconds at 149 mph. In this video, you’ll see the Barracuda make a 9.86-second pass while hearing the story behind the car, its engine and its long racing history.
The Barracuda also retains several period Super Stock-style lightweight components sourced during its original build, including a fiberglass front end and specialty lightweight parts.
Despite wanting to reach the eight-second zone, the owner understands how quickly the cost of chasing faster elapsed times can escalate. Instead, he has focused on maintaining a powerful but dependable nine-second combination that can repeatedly return to the drag strip.
